As with any stain, the key is to act fast. Otherwise you’re left with an unsightly stain on your rug, clothes or even your driveway. If you notice a recent stain on your driveway, we’ve gathered seven methods for removing it. And if you have an old stain, these methods can help diminish its appearance.

Oil Spill Driveway

For each method, begin by soaking up the excess oil and gathering the materials you’ll need. That includes a stiff scrub brush (or push broom if you’d like to stay on your feet), and a bucket or garden hose for water.

1. Cola

The easiest method to remove oil from your driveway is with a cola soda. Just pour a can or two on the stain, let it sit overnight and wash it off with the hose. Repeat as needed for deep stains.

2. Cat Litter

Not only can you use the litter to soak up the excess oil, but you can use it to clean the stain, too. Cover the stain with clay cat litter (the cheap one will work just fine) and leave it overnight. The next day, sweep up the litter and rinse the spot.

3. Dish Detergent

There’s a reason they use Dawn Dish Detergent for animal victims of oil spills. Dawn works. Squirt it on the stain on your driveway, add water and scrub with your stiff brush. Rinse off with the hose and be in awe of the power of Dawn.

4. Powdered Laundry Detergent

Another detergent that works well is powdered laundry detergent. Sprinkle it on the stain to cover and add some water so you can scrub it into the stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes and wipe away the solution.

5. WD-40

Is there anything WD-40 can’t do? Spray this all over the stain, let it sit for a moment and hose off. Easy as fixing a squeaky hinge.

6. Oven Cleaner

If it works on the grease in your oven, it would make sense it works on your driveway. Spray the stain, let it sit 5-10 minutes, scrub, and then rinse with your hose set to the highest pressure. The cleaner may lift some deep stains on your driveway, so if you notice the stain isn’t completely gone the next day, repeat the process.

7. Baking Soda

Besides WD-40, baking soda is the other miracle cleaner. Sprinkle it over the stain to cover, scrub it in and wait 30 minutes. Rinse with a hose and you’re good to go.

No method is foolproof, but the above have proven to be very successful. If you find that with any of these methods the stain isn’t totally gone the next day, give it another go because some stains can be very deep. After one to three applications, your driveway will be as clean as ever!
